Prayer 18: For Humble Leadership

2 Corinthians, Intercession: Life and Leadership, Philippians

Gracious Father, what a privilege to stand together seeking you and the full riches of our inheritance in Christ. Oh, how we thank you! No doubt, one indicator of our depth of understanding of your great work on the cross is measured by the Christ-ordained humility that exudes in and through our lives. Bless us continually with a sober-minded humility knowing that you alone, Christ Jesus, redeemed our hopeless souls through your powerful work at the cross. Overwhelm us with humble gratitude, supernaturally saturating all relationships with understanding, hope, kindness, gentleness, patience, and a prayerful spirit for Christ’s glory.

We confess that Christ-like humility is a gift from you, Lord. There is no fleshly predisposition that leads us toward godly humility. No! Much the opposite. We will kidnap anything for our own glory with a natural desire to increase our own fleshly kingdom. Forgive us, Father.

Help! Reign in our lives through the power of your Holy Spirit, uncoupling the grip of fleshly pride and revealing our pure freedom found in Christ, overflowing through humility. Lord Jesus, we are reminded of what C.S. Lewis said, “True Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.”

Why is this so? We need not think of ourselves when we experience the rich fullness of your unconditional love and your ongoing powerful presence. Our needs are fully met. Father, make this supernatural filling true in our lives.

Out of your abundance give us Christ-centered humility that:

  • is free from pride and ego
  • has no need to fight for position or power
  • is able to see beyond ourselves
  • knows that life doesn’t revolve around us
  • quickly confesses our sins
  • is quick to surrender to God’s will
  • is able to listen to and follow God’s wisdom
  • exudes a teachable spirit
  • looks after the interest of others
  • serves others well
  • ushers in healing to our church and community
  • seeks Christ-centered peace in relationships

Thank you, Jesus, for your perfect example. You, Jesus being the very nature of God, humbled yourself, becoming obedient to death on a cross so we could live.

In Christ,

Blessings!

Philippians 2:6-8
Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!

2 Chronicles 7:14
If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

Philippians 2:3-4
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

Without understanding how to apply the gospel daily and access its power on a moment-by-moment basis, the believer is left to his own methods to attempt to live for God. (Pg. 20-Mistaken Identity)
